His book In the Palm of Your Hand: A Poet's Portable Workshop has been used in high schools, colleges, universities and writing workshops across the country since its publication in 1995. WebSummer 2004. Steve Kowit was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and has lived on the West Coast for the past 27 years or so. He came of age during the Lower East Side coffee-house poetry-reading scene of the early 1960s, moved to Haight-Ashbury and lived there until the Vietnam War heated up, then fled with his wife to Mexico and parts south.
