It starts really easily but does not get to full speed (there is no idle setting). It surges high and low and backfires through the muffler, cold or hot. There is no carb adjustment. I changed the plug, put in fresh 93 octane gas, checked fuel ... Webb4. 2. Posted: Aug 30, 2015. Options. backfire is a result of half burned, hot exhaust finding oxygen to finish burning. I'd change the spark plug first. I'm guessing its also hard to start or does it just do this when the engine has been running?

If you have a throttle that you use to reduce speed, gradually let it up instead of letting it rebound quickly. The second most likely cause is a carburetor that is not adjusted correctly. The only damage I've ever had was blown power valves, even in the carbs with power valve protection. But you can bend the throttle blades or distroy the whole carb in a really bad one. With a supercharger, you can blow the whole supercharger off.
